Drug Policy Alliance

The DPA sent out postcards for their members to mail to the White House, that read as follows:

Dear President Bush: It's time to be honest about the failure of the War on Drugs. Please seize this opportunity to speak truthfully about your own personal experience, and to call for an open, honest re-evaluation of our nation's punitive drug policies. End the double standard that forgives some people their youthful indiscretions while others are locked up and tarred for life. Stop the Justice Department from imprisoning nonviolent drug law offenders and especially the terminally ill who use marijuana for medical reasons. It is time to stop the hypocrisy and replace punitive drug laws with policies based on reason, compassion, and justice. Respectfully, ________

Law Enforcement Against Prohibition
Some of the most important voices to listen to in the struggle to end the War on Drugs are the police officers who know what's really going on and admit we desperately need to change things.

MPP's Nevada Initiative
A really promising initiative to tax and regulate marijuana sales in Nevada may not make it onto the ballot this fall after all. The campaign organizers insist that 54,120 valid signatures were turned in on schedule, but the government is trying to disqualify many of the signatures under a previously unenforced technicality, and is claiming they missed the 51,337-signature requirement by more than 16,000. So now it's a court battle, and of course MPP needs extra funding. We've also set up a page at their server to make it easy for others to help with a small gift of their own. Thank you for helping us try to change the world!

Criminal Justice
Policy Foundation
Eric Sterling and four or five of his interns protested with us in front of Steny Hoyer's office last week. CJPFs mission is to educate the public about the impact of our country's drug policy and the problems of policing on the criminal justice system - and it was inspiring to listen to Eric and Tyler and even Fleur, a high school intern, speak about the issues into the megaphone.

Change the Climate
This group was one of the plaintiffs in an ACLU law suit against Congress and Metro, for a law Congress passed banning drug peace advertising on the subway. This week a U.S. District Judge voided the law saying it was unconstitutional and a clear case of "viewpoint discrimination." Yay! We look forward to more ads that tell the truth about marijuana at metro stations in the months to come!

Efficacy
This is a really cool web site. Be sure to see it's terrific presentation in clear, brief language. The simple visuals are attractive. The audio available on each page (play if you choose) is concise and thought provoking. For example, "Did you know that it took the United States 200 years to lock up the first million priosoners, and it has only taken took 10 years to lock up the second million?" (By the way, Efficacy is supporting "the 'Truth in Trials' Act, H.R. 1717 to enable medical marijuana patients and providers in states with pro-medical marijuana laws to tell the juries the whole truth.")
