Chapter 14 of The Empty City

The man and the woman had been watching television for about twenty minutes.

"Boy, it sure is hot in here," said the man, wiping sweat off of his brow. He looked at his wife, who was also sweating. "Yes, it is," she replied.

Then suddenly, without any prior warning, the man burst into flames. His wife screamed once, then she too exploded in a ball of fire. Their bodies burned quickly; in under two minutes they were completely consumed, leaving only their shoes, and small piles of ashes on the scorched fabric of the couch.

The television set continued to bathe the room in glowing blue light. A man tried to sell toilet tissue to the two piles of ashes.
