Chapter 30 of The Empty City

By Andrew Looney

Just as Torrence and Maria were leaving the Henderson Diner, Denise came in, intending to review it for her forthcoming book. She had just come from an Automat on 187th street, where she had greatly enjoyed a bowl of thick, creamy, chicken noodle soup. Now, she was interested in something for her sweet tooth, perhaps something chocolate, to top off the meals she'd had that day. Then it would be off to bed.

After some agonizing over the menu, she finally decided on and ordered a slice of chocolate cream pie.

"Sorry, miss, sold the last piece 'bout an hour ago."

Denise sighed, and settled on a chocolate milk shake. It came in a tall glass with a huge mound of whipped cream on top and a wafer cookie on the side. An authentic malt can containing an extra serving was also placed before her, and this attention to detail won for the diner the following rating in Denise's book, Great Diners of the World: "Beautiful architecture, although a bit run down, and outstanding food. Five stars."
