f1.7 - Charles Dickson's Photo Essays

Hello all and welcome to my photo pages. I really enjoy photography, and make an effort to take shots that make a grander statement than the average Kodak moment. But is it art? Well, I'm not sure. I'd be happy to debate either side of that argument with you to see what conclusions we come up with. I'm calling my archive "f1.7", since that is how I take photos under any condition these days. It started with an unnatural attraction for low-light shots (always hand-held), but even under normal conditions now I keep it open and simply crank the shutter speed up. There's something I like about the effect of a wide aperature photo - I've basically ripped the knob off.

You may now view my archive in either the original "book" form or with thumbnails. The book form is a chain you enter from the front (or at the start of the newest pictures on weeks when they are available), with the ability to go forward or back. This is still the simplest, fastest, and purest way to view my archive, so I encourage it! I've now compressed most of the photos in the chain so they load fast and fit on most screens (no bigger than 4x6 inches). Both the "fast" and "original" versions of the photos are offered in the thumbnails section; the "fast" links take you directly to the book so you may read forward or backwards if you wish after jumping in from the thumbnails. If you have a large screen and plenty of download speed, the "original" versions of the photos are less compressed, and often bigger than 4x6. But, these links are cul-de-sacs for now; for the "original" pages links are provided only to return to the thumbnails. Great things are planned for these "high quality" pages in the future, however!

Or, View My Archive With Thumbnails.

These images are all original and are somewhat protected by the very act of my publication of them. However, you are all capable of downloading and saving what you find here if you wish; I have few illusions about the De Facto public domain nature of the Web. But if you think you'd like to publish one of these photos on another page or in another media, I would very much like to know; please E-mail me and let me know how you're attributing it to me! Also, I wouldn't mind working for money if you are looking for an eccentric photographer; again, please contact me through E-mail.

Charles
