If you liked Apollo 13, you owe it to yourself to find a way of seeing this HBO-produced mini-series. If you don't get HBO, look for it at das rentalplatz or order it from Columbia House. It's simply fabulous. Each episode covers one mission, and each is a little self contained movie about that mission, each seen from a different perspective. [more]

What's New?

New Iceland cartoonthe story so far

Our Big News this week is that the Origins Award nominations have been announced, and our 2 main games are both on the ballot. The Origins Award for Best Card Game of 1998 will go to one of the following five games: Fluxx, Falling, Lord of the Fries, Guillotine, or Aquarius. This puts 2 of my best offerings into direct competition with 2 from my arch-rival, Mr. James Ernest of Cheapass Games... so, let the showdown begin! Having just won the Mensa Select seal, Fluxx stands a pretty good chance of winning; but I've got a lot of admiration for Falling, and I could easily seeing it taking the cake instead. (And then there's that fifth game, published by a little outfit named Wizards of the Coast... ) As they say, it's an honor just to be nominated.

With the spring weather being as beautiful as it is, I've been making good use of the splendid network of bike trails in and around our neighborhood. But during Monday's ride, I wiped out! I hit a patch of gravel at the bottom of a hill and suddenly found myself sliding along the pavement. It was my first bike wreck in years, and the worst I've had in even longer... I've got road rash on both hands, my right knee and right shoulder, with (of course) my right hand taking most of the damage. It was a bad day, but it could have been worse... I'm glad I was wearing my helmet. It's kind of hard for me to work with all these bandages on my hands, but it's nothing that won't heal.

Sorry to say, there's not much new at the site this week. Last week, we put so much effort into launching Contagious Dreams, that we've kind of been taking it easy this week. (Plus I'm still working on that programming task Kristin assigned me, and I tore up my hands...)

Also, now that the store is operational, we're shifting gears from building the site to promoting the site, which has us doing more planning and design than visible construction. Of particular note is the fact that the Empty City will be done in a few months, and it's time to start figuring out what we will replace it with. To this end, I've started writing 55 word short stories... I'm hoping to get far enough ahead on those to be able to commit to putting up a new one each week. (I wrote 4 of 'em this week, and I think they're pretty good!)

Thought Residue
Yes, I know... this week's calendar strip is wrong, Star Wars opened on Wednesday. But when I drew the calendar shirt, the opening day was set for tomorrow, and I'm still irked about the change. I refuse to see it before the proper opening date.
Drug Czar Barry McCaffery recently announced that "the most dangerous drug in America today is still alcohol." So why are the dealers of our nation's most dangerous drug allowed to advertise on TV, while people who smoke pot are being sent to jail every day, in record numbers?
"It is against the grain of modern education to teach children to program. What fun is there in making plans, acquiring discipline in organizing thoughts, devoting attention to detail, and learning to be self-critical?" -- Alan Perlis
