Chapter 88 of The Empty City

By Andrew Looney

At a few minutes before one o'clock in the morning, Dave quietly unlocked the door to apartment 1017 and went in. The others were asleep, and the apartment was dark.

He was in a bitter mood. That evening he had taken the Princess to see a movie called "Neon Highways." Afterwards, they'd had a big argument. He had hated the movie, and she had loved it. During the entire subway ride home, Dave had run down parts of the movie that he thought were stupid, but the Princess refused to acknowledge his arguments. She had enjoyed the film, and that was that. After listening to him for awhile, it seemed to Dave that she'd started to ignore him, to tune him out. And finally, when they'd gotten back to her apartment, she'd asked him not to stay, making some excuse about having to get up early in the morning. And so, with great frustration, Dave had walked back out to the Zephyr Heights subway station and taken a train back home.

He flipped on the light to his room and saw a mannequin wearing some of his clothes. He wasn't amused. He crawled into bed and went to sleep.
