Andrew Looney: Game Designer

I became a game designer quite by accident; I had always planned on being a writer. But in describing a fictional game called Icehouse, I was unwittingly taking the first step towards creating the real thing. Later, after accidentally inventing a videogame (when hired to simply program one), I decided to try making game design my career. I proved I could intentionally create a great game with Fluxx, and we've been publishing my best ideas ever since. To date, I've won five Origins game design awards, and I've gotten three patents!

BOARD GAMES

  • Stonehenge Hippie Festival: In 2007 I was commissioned to create a game for the Nocturne expansion to the Stonehenge Anthology Board Game.
  • Cosmic Coasters: I invented this as something to do in a bar beside drinking
  • Q-Turn: The Little Wooden Nickel Game also works well in a bar-type setting
  • Proton: I designed this game using the constraints of a 15-square sliding-tile puzzle.

ICEHOUSE GAMES

I created the Icehouse set itself, in 1986, when I first started writing the stories that became my novel, The Empty City. I co-authored Playing with Pyramids, and I've designed many games for the pieces, including:

VIDEO GAMES

  • Icebreaker: The full 150-level version of my first videogame was once available for Mac, Windows, and the 3DO multilpayer... but now the only way to get one is to find a copy on e-bay.
  • Icebreaker 2: The sequel was never really finished but it has lots of cool features and after a decade of being totally unavailable, it was finally published in 2007 -- for the 3DO!

GAMES YOU CAN PLAY FREE ONLINE

  • Icebreaker: You can still download the 5-level demo version
  • Javaquarius: we host Kory's version of Aquarius at our own site; check the Arcade page to find out what other e-daptations are available (or in the works)
  • Andy's Brain: This is my way-outta-date brain on the web (it's not really a game, but it's kind of like an old text adventure)

GAMES YOU CANNOT GET

  • The Human Game Board T-Shirt: Lie on your stomach and be a game board!
  • Arthur's Buttons: The puzzle party game for 29 players
  • Jake's Saloon: A never tested LARP for 8 players
  • Fire-Water-Wood: a silly little Rock-Paper-Scissors expansion
  • Other Stuff: Notes on other, even more obscure game stuff I've done
